Information on the island of Lipari

Lipari is an Aeolian archipelago, just a few nautical miles from Sicily. It has become one of the most sought-after international tourist destinations for the beauty of its coasts which feature jagged profiles, sea caves which open in the rock, and the cheery atmosphere of its small centre.

– The Castle of Lipari where you can visit:
– the archaeological excavations
– the interesting archaeological museum “Luigi Bernabò Brea”
– the cathedral (1094) and its Norman cloister
– Church of Santa Caterina (XVI century)
– Church of the Addolorata (XVII century) sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lipari
– Church of the Immacolata (XVIII century)
– Church of Maria SS Delle Grazie (XVIII century)
– the Church of the Anime del Purgatorio (XIII century) in the small port of Marina Corta which houses a miniature reconstruction of the area
– the archaeological park of the Diana district
– the thermal baths of San Calogero with the ancient pseudo-domed chamber of Mycenaean architecture, discovered in 1984. The building houses an interesting “Museum of Memory” on the history of the baths and pumice stone of Lipari
– the white mountains of pumice stone with the abandoned factories

Vulcano: the steaming thermal baths and climb to the crater

Stromboli: climb to the crater

Salina: climb to Monte dei Porri and Monte Felci, home to lush vegetation; museum close to Lake Lingua

Filicudi: archaeological excavations, a museum, a sea excursion to the Grotta del bue Marino (Grotto of the sea ox) and to “La Canna” an imposing stack of basaltic rock.

Alicudi: climb among the bushy heather

Panarea: an island surrounded by other small islands. It features endogenous sea events due to the presence of submarine volcanoes

Volcanic-in-origin, they provide a unique model in the historical evolution of studies in vulcanology providing two types of eruption (Vulcanian and Strombolian). Researchers of all levels are attracted here, especially to Stromboli.

It is easy to be attracted by the charm of an erupting volcano like Stromboli or that of Vulcano Island, which has been dormant for more than 100 years. Further downstream, there is the opportunity to wallow in thermal waters and mud baths which offer important therapeutic benefits or to walk on ground full of fumaroles.
